Το Εθνικό Μουσείο Σύγχρονης Τέχνης (ΕΜΣΤ) ξεκίνησε τη λειτουργία του το 2000. Μόνιμη στέγη του Μουσείου είναι το πρώην εργοστάσιο ζυθοποιίας Φιξ στη Λεωφ.Συγγρού, η ανακατασκευή του οποίου ολοκληρώθηκε τον Φεβρουάριο του 2014. Το κτήριο καταλαμβάνει 18.142 τμ. σε οικόπεδο επιφανείας 3.123 τμ.
Από τις 30 Σεπτεμβρίου του 2008 το ΕΜΣΤ φιλοξενήθηκε σε τμήμα του κτηρίου του Ωδείου Αθηνών, ενώ από το 2003 μέχρι το 2008 φιλοξενήθηκε στο Μέγαρο Μουσικής Αθηνών. Έχει παρουσιάσει εκθέσεις και δράσεις στην ΑΣΚΤ και στο δημόσιο χώρο.
Η συλλογή του Μουσείου συγκροτείται γύρω από ένα σημαντικό πυρήνα έργων Ελλήνων και ξένων καλλιτεχνών, όπως οι Στήβεν Αντωνάκος, o Μπιλ Βιόλα, ο Ντίκος Βυζάντιος, η Έμιλυ Ζασίρ, o Ίλια και η Εμίλια Καμπακόφ, ο Βλάσης Κανιάρης, ο Νίκος Κεσσανλής, ο Γιάννης Κουνέλλης, η Σιρίν Νεσάτ, ο Λουκάς Σαμαράς, ο Κώστας Τσόκλης, η Μόνα Χατούμ, ο Γκάρυ Χιλλ, η Χρύσα, κ.ά., που συνεχώς εμπλουτίζεται.
Το νέο κτήριο, που εγκαινίασε τους χώρους των περιοδικών του εκθέσεων στις 31.10.2016, με την έκθεση "Κρίσιμοι Διάλογοι: Αθήνα – Αμβέρσα" ταυτόχρονα μετο Πρόγραμμα "Το ΕΜΣΤ στον κόσμο" , θα διαθέσει δύο και πλέον από τους ορόφους του για την παρουσίαση της μόνιμης συλλογής του, ενώ θα διαθέτει χώρους για περιοδικές εκθέσεις, συνέδρια, εκδηλώσεις, εκπαιδευτικά προγράμματα για μικρούς και μεγάλους, βιβλιοθήκη, project room, media lounge κλπ. Θα είναι εξοπλισμένο με καφέ και εστιατόριο./
The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST) began its operation in 2000. Permanent home of the Museum is the former Fix brewery on Syngrou Ave., the reconstruction of which was completed in February 2014. The building occupies 18.142 sqm. on a 3.123 sqm surface.
From September 30th, 2008, EMST was hosted in sections of the building of the Athens Conservatory, while from 2003 until 2008 it was hosted in the Athens Concert Hall. It had also presented exhibitions and events at the Athens School of Fine Arts and in the public space.
The Museum’s collection is formed around a very important nucleus of works by Greek and foreign artists, such as Stephen Antonakos, Constantin (Dikos) Byzantios, Vlassis Caniaris, Chryssa, Mona Hatoun, Gary Hill, Emily Jacir, Ilya and Emilia Kabakov, Nikos Kessanlis, Jannis Kounellis, Shirin Neshat, Lucas Samaras, Costas Tsoclis, Bill Viola, a.o, which is constantly enriched.
The first exhibition, entitled "Urgent Conversations: Athens – Antwerp" inaugurated in 31.10.2016 the temporary exhibition spaces of EMST simultaneously with the Program "EMST in the World". The new building, will dispose two and more of its floors, for the presentation of its permanent collection, while it will also have spaces for temporary exhibitions, conferences, events, educational programs for children and adults, a library, a project room, a media lounge etc. It will be equipped with a café and a restaurant.
