The School is a teaching institution that introduces graduate students to the sites and monuments of Greek civilization with an academic-year program and two summer sessions. The Blegen Library is dedicated to classical and archaeological studies, while the Gennadius Library, opened in 1926 with 26,000 volumes from Joannes Gennadius, concentrates on post-antique Greece. The Wiener Laboratory is an internationally recognized research facility devoted to the application of scientific techniques to the study of archaeological materials in Greece. Since its earliest years, the School has sponsored archaeological exploration, particularly at Ancient Corinth and the Athenian Agora. Many other American excavation and survey projects are carried out under the auspices of the School, in cooperation with the Greek Ministry of Culture. The American School's Publications Office produces books related to the mission of the School as well as Hesperia, one of the world's leading journals for scholarship on Greek studies.
